So you’re an RDH in the QC –  who and where do you go to for training, education, and even for new career opportunities?

It’s 2021, and we’re back to networking. If you’re a dental pro in the QC, here’s how you do it.

Get to know these trusted Charlotte pros

Who’s the best of the best in the city – the top-dog, best-in-the-biz, creme-de-la-creme of professional dental talent? We’ll break it down for you.

  • Eileen Clark is the lead dental hygiene instructor at Central Piedmont Community College, and is extremely active in our local community. She’s an ambassador for the NC Mission of Mercy-Charlotte Dental Clinic, a volunteer-driven outreach program made up of dentists, hygienists, and assistants. She’s also a member of the North Carolina Oral Health Collaborative – if you’re interested in equitable access and outreach, she’s definitely the one to know!
  • Dr. Linda Polito, D.D.S. is an instructor at CPCC and a dentist in the school’s clinic, which offers low cost dental care for people without insurance or those who can not otherwise afford care. She’s extremely experienced and is actively involved in the Charlotte dental scene. If you didn’t know her name, you do now.
  • Dr. Christopher Van Kesteren, D.D.S. is another top-of-his-game dentist in the area. He’s a periodontist at North State Perio (and works with the North State Perio study group), and is actively involved in many of the other study groups and continuing education pursuits in the area – a name worth knowing!

Find a local study group

Knowing the big names in Charlotte is great – but don’t forget your fellow up-and-coming talent. There are plenty of study groups to get involved in in the Charlotte area that can help you navigate continuing education courses and credits, keep you in the networking loop, and even just hang out and relax with the people that really get you and your passion. Check out some of these groups:

  • North State Perio offers membership in the North Charlotte Dental Hygiene Study Club. It meets four times a year, offers 1.5 CE credits per class – and while they have been meeting on Zoom during the pandemic, they plan to reconvene at the Great Wolf Lodge later in the year. They also provide dinner, so grab a bite and learn something new!
  • Charlotte Perio is home to the Charlotte Dental Hygiene Study Club – they also meet four times a year, with each meeting totaling 1.5 CE hours. Attend all four and you’ll meet the 6-hour yearly requirement – all while connecting with your fellow RDHs.
  • South Park Perio has put their seminars on hold due to Covid – but stay tuned…

And don’t forget to check out the North Carolina Dental Board for more information and opportunity!

Connect with your former classmates

Charlotte is full of top dental talent, thanks in large part to the dental hygiene clinic at CPCC (hey Eileen and Dr. Polito!). The RDHs, along with the assistants from Charlotte Dental Assistant School and The Dental Assistant Academy of Charlotte, and the dentists from the top North Carolina programs at UNC and ECU, make Charlotte a desirable location for all dental industry professionals. You’re bound to have some contacts!

Get in touch with some of your former classmates, especially if you went to school nearby. Organize a class reunion or coordinate a social outing at a nearby restaurant or brewery. Share stories and resources – and don’t forget to let them know about us!

One of the best things about Charlotte – and if you’ve lived here for any length of time, you’ll know – is that it’s a big city with a small town feel. It’s easy to connect and get involved in local events, programs, etc. Use that network to your advantage!

So, next time you’re at a study group, exchange numbers with a few people. Grab dinner, go to a concert. Get to know the locals in your field, and you’ll always have the opportunity to grow.

And you’ll also know who to look out for on Biteline.
