3 steps you can take to get back on track if your day has gone awry

Do you ever have one of those days? You know, one of those days – where everything seems to go wrong? Maybe you started the day by spilling your coffee, or got into a disagreement with a co-worker. Or maybe you’re just having a hard time focusing – you can’t concentrate and fall behind. It’s hard to stay positive, and productive, when your entire day has been derailed.

Here are some of our favorite ways to get back on track if your day has gone awry.

Take a breather

Slow down; take a breath. Stress releases adrenaline, which increases your heart rate and elevates your blood pressure – it has an actual physiological effect on your health. And with your heart rate and blood pressure up, it can be difficult to calm down. So, the first thing to do is become aware of your stress, and whatever situations cause it. Of course, try to avoid those situations, but sometimes it’s just the job itself.

So be mindful in these moments. Take a minute (or a few) to yourself – try walking around the office or sitting down in the break room.

When you’re ready to get back in action, start small! Approach the rest of your day as a series of small tasks, and check each one off as you go along. It will help things seem much more manageable – and it will help you to have perspective on the bigger picture, without becoming completely overwhelmed.

Talk it out

Find a co-worker you trust. Ask them to listen. After all, they know your job well – and they’ve probably been where you are now.

Explain the problem; get it off your chest. Sometimes, talking things out can help us realize the true problem – we don’t understand it until we put it into words. Sometimes, it helps to gain an outside perspective – we can benefit from other people’s experiences. And sometimes, it just helps to know that there is someone there to listen.

So, set up an impromptu lunch date with that co-worker, or ask him or her to take a walk around the office – lighten your load. You can even take a 5-minute break to call a loved one outside of work – maybe that’s what you need at that moment. 

And once you make it through the day, you can go for dinner and drinks after work!

Get outside

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – when it comes to feeling better, we love to get outside! Being in nature for even 10 minutes has been proven to reduce anxiety – even boost mood and energy – allowing you to focus better and get back to work. And it can reduce the blood pressure that has probably crept up, and keep you feeling calm and collected. Plus, taking a little stroll might get your heart rate up in a healthy way, so you can shake that stress away!

It doesn’t take much to throw your day off-course – especially a workday, and especially with everything going on right now. But you don’t have to let it completely knock out your mood or your productivity. Figure out the best way to become aware of when you start to become stressed – the first step is to be mindful. Then, you can take action!

Step back. Talk to a friend. Take a stroll.

And remember, you can always start fresh tomorrow.
